One of the biggest financial benefits of being a full-time student in the UK is the 100% exemption from Council Tax. This can save you hundreds of pounds per year. Here is everything you need to know about claiming your exemption.
What Is Council Tax?
Council Tax is a local government tax charged on residential properties in England, Scotland, and Wales. The amount varies by location and property band, but typically ranges from £1,200 to £2,500 per year. As a full-time student, you do not have to pay it.
Who Qualifies for Exemption?
You qualify for full Council Tax exemption if you are enrolled on a full-time course that lasts at least one academic year, with at least 21 hours of study per week (including independent study time). All SAGA Global Education courses meet this requirement.
How to Claim Your Exemption
Step 1: Request a Student Status Letter from your university or SAGA. This letter confirms your full-time student status and course dates.
Step 2: Contact your local council and inform them that you are a full-time student. Most councils have an online form for this.
Step 3: Submit your Student Status Letter to the council. They will update your account and remove the Council Tax charge.
What If You Live with a Non-Student?
If you share a property with someone who is not a full-time student, the household is not fully exempt. However, you are still entitled to a 25% discount on the Council Tax bill. The non-student resident is responsible for paying the remaining 75%.
What If You Have Already Paid?
If you have been paying Council Tax while enrolled as a full-time student, you may be entitled to a refund. Contact your local council with your Student Status Letter and request a reassessment of your account.
